Data status

Every number on this site is traceable to a US federal agency. Below is the current status of each series we track — its source, the exact series ID, its latest value, and a link so you can verify any figure yourself. Nothing here is hidden.

Why these dates differ

Federal sources publish on their own schedules — BLS consumer prices monthly with a lag of several weeks, EIA fuel prices weekly, HUD rents and Census income once a year. So the “As of” column below is deliberately uneven, and the newest row here is normally newer than the basket.

The Basket Index uses the latest period for which every basket input exists, because the basket cannot be priced for a month that any of its items is missing. That is what “Data through” means everywhere else on the site.

Tracked series

These are the national series, read straight from each agency, so every row is “Observed”. “Estimated” would mean the source was unavailable at the last refresh and a modelled stand-in is standing in its place — labelled wherever it appears, and never used silently. State figures are “Modeled”: the national series adjusted to that state's regional price level, which is explained on each state page and in the methodology.

How to verify a number yourself

Pick any item, note its latest value above, then click “Source” to open the exact series at BLS, FRED, or EIA. The figures should match (allowing for the agency's usual ~2-week publication lag). If you ever find a discrepancy, that's a bug — and we'd want to know.
