Basket Index is a public data site. It has no accounts and no reason to know who you are. It sells one thing — the Local Cost Brief — and only a buyer of that tells us anything about themselves. This page says exactly what it stores.
Your basket. If you use My Basket, the quantities you enter — and the income and pay-change figures, if you type them — are saved in your browser's local storage. They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser data deletes them.
A price snapshot. To show what changed since your last visit, your browser also keeps the unit prices as they stood when you last saw a release. It holds no quantities, no totals and no income, and it never leaves your device.
The brief you configured. When you continue to payment for a Local Cost Brief, the options you picked (geography, household, comparisons, ZIP) are kept in this browser tab's session storage so the confirmation page can show them back to you. Never your organisation or email; it disappears when you close the tab.
Two cookies. bi-region remembers the region you chose. bi-geo holds a two-letter state code derived once from your connection, so the first page you see is about where you are. Neither carries an identifier; both expire after 180 days.
Page views, through Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not build a profile of you.
A small number of product events — which region was picked, whether a basket was completed, whether a chart was shared. Every one carries only categories and counts. None carries an email address, a name, a ZIP code, an income, a pay figure, a basket total, or anything you typed.
Your email address, only if you give it to us for the newsletter, along with the interests and region you select and which page you signed up from. Every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe, and unsubscribing is honoured immediately.
If you buy a Local Cost Brief, Stripe handles the payment on its own checkout page. Your card details never reach Basket Index. Stripe gives us the email address and name you enter there, the organisation name if you add one, and the brief options you chose, so we can build and send the brief and answer questions about the order. We keep them for as long as we need them for that, for refunds and for our records. See Terms of sale.
To leave the newsletter, use the unsubscribe link in any issue or email hello@basketindex.org. To remove what is stored on your device, clear this site's data in your browser — we cannot do it for you, because we cannot see it.
